Wiki Speaks Your Language

Hello all and sorry for writing this message in English. It is my pleasure to inform you about the launch of the Wiki Speaks Your Language initiative with the goal of enriching the Wikimedia projects with freely licenced audio (and video) files documenting spoken examples of every language, language variety and dialect in the world.

The idea originates from the curiosity of many readers viewing language articles not only to read about the language but also to hear how does it sound. In most of the cases, our language articles lack such files and readers usually end up searching videos on YouTube, notwithstanding that we have the capacity as a movement and the resources to meet their wish.

The initiative lists three possible ways of acquiring the freely licenced audio (and video) files: 1) by adapting existing audio and video files on Wikimedia Commons (mostly from the Spoken Wikipedia projects), 2) by liberating existing audio and video files from the repositories of GLAM and educational institutions, and 3) by engaging Wikimedia communities, GLAM and educational institutions in the recording of new audio and video files.

In the first phase of the initiative, the easiest way to start is by working with the resources we already have and therefore my proposal and kind request to the Esperanto Wikipedia community is to get involved in adapting existing videos from the Spoken Wikipedia project. There are some useful tips on what the existing files should be adapted to. The adapted files should be categorised under "Category:Wiki Speaks Esperanto", tagged with WSYL template and added to the list of languages.

Mi pardonpetas por mian malbonan Esperanton.

Mi demandis min se estus ebla klakebligi specialajn Esperantajn signojn en la menuo « Specialaj Signoj » kiam oni redaktas. Cxiumomente ne estas Esperanta menuo, tamen estus (almenaux por mi) la plej bona maniero de skribi cxiojn. Atendonta, mi uzos {{X}}.

Ankaux, cxu estas ebla de peti iu pri relegi miajn redaktajxojn ? Mi certas ke mian Esperanton ankoraux ne estas suficxe bone, sed Vikipedio estas bonega maniero por lerni, do mi ne scias kion fari pri gxi. ^^

Recent changes

• You can now upload WebP files to Commons. [6]

Problems

• video2commons was down for two weeks. This was because of a problem with Commons video transcoders. It is now back up. [7]

Changes this week

• There is a new magic word called {{PAGELANGUAGE}}. It returns the language of the page you are at. This can be used on wikis with more than one language to make it easier for translators. [8]
• When an admin blocks a user or deletes or protects a page they give a reason why. They can now get suggestions when they write. The suggestions will be based on the messages in the dropdown menu. [9]
• You will be able to use <chem> to write chemical formulas. Before you could use <ce>. <ce> should be replaced by <chem>. [10]
• You now can add exceptions for categories which shouldn't be shown on Special:UncategorizedCategories. The list is at MediaWiki:Uncategorized-categories-exceptionlist. [11]
• The "Columns" and "Rows" settings will be removed from the Editing tab in Preferences. If you wish to keep what the "Rows" setting did you can add this code to your personal CSS: #wpTextbox1 { height: 50em; } You can change the number 50 to make it look like you want to. [12]
• Sometimes edits in MediaWiki by mistake are shown coming from private IP addresses such as 127.0.0.1. Edits and other contributions logged to these IP addresses will be blocked and shown the reason from MediaWiki:Softblockrangesreason. This should not affect most users. Bots and other tools running on Wikimedia Labs, including Tool Labs will receive a "blocked" error if they try to edit without being logged in. [13]
• When you edit with the visual editor categories will be on the top of the page options menu. [14]
• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 17 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 18 January. It will be on all wikis from 19 January (calendar).

Parametraj valoroj el Vikidatumoj / el la artikolo?

Vidu ekzemple: Johann Gottlob Lehmann.

En la fontoteksto de la artikolo, la parametro "alma_mater" de la sxablono "informkesto sciencisto" havas valoron, sed tiu ne aperas kiam oni rigardas la artikolon. Sxajne la sxablono tute ignoras la donitan valoron de la parametro kaj anstataŭe montras tion kion gxi trovas cxe Vikidatumoj (en cxi tiu kazo: neniun).

Pluraj parametroj havas jenan konduton:

• Aux, ili montras valoron el Vikidatumoj kaj ignoras la donitan valoron (ekz-e alma_mater cxi tie, aux patro / patrino en Informkesto reganto, ktp.)
• Aux, ili montras nur la donitan valoron kaj ignoras Vikidatumojn (ekz-e alma_mater en Informkesto verkisto, ktp.)

Nek la unua nek la dua konduto estas tute bona. Dezirinda konduto por multaj parametroj estu:

• Montru la donitan valoron, se tiu ekzistas kaj estas ne malplena, alie montru valoron el Vikidatumoj.

Cxu iu scias kiel teknike realigi tiun dezirindan konduton?

Listo de homoj naskitaj en Kimrio

Jam longe roboto pluredaktas tiu ĉi liston, kiu jam estas terure longa, eĉ mia komputilo ne povas aperigi ĝin tuj. Simila listo mankas en Vp, sed estas pli malgrandaj listoj, kiuj donas informojn laŭ urboj (aŭ laŭ aliaj vidpunktoj). Developer Wishlist Survey: propose your ideas

The Wikimedia technical community seeks input from developers for developers, to create a high-profile list of desired improvements. The scope of the survey includes the MediaWiki platform (core software, APIs, developer environment, enablers for extensions, gadgets, templates, bots, dumps), the Wikimedia server infrastructure, the contribution process, and documentation.

The best part: we want to have the results published by Wednesday, February 15. Yes, in a month, to have a higher chance to influence the Wikimedia Foundation annual plan FY 2017-18.

There's no time to lose. Propose your ideas before the end of January, either by pushing existing tasks in Phabricator or by creating new ones. You can find instructions on the wiki page. Questions and feedback are welcome especially on the related Talk page.
